Zinc Investment Management LLP is a UK venture capital investor in deep tech companies in health, life sciences and environmental technologies. Zinc invests at the earliest stages, turning cutting-edge UK science into globally ambitious commercial companies.
In health, Zinc invests in engineering biology, medical devices, therapeutics, clinical services and enabling technologies in life sciences. In environmental technologies, Zinc invests in clean energy, materials innovation, food & agriculture, and climate adaptation.
With its first £30m Fund, Zinc has built a diversified portfolio of over 40 companies across health and environment, including spin-outs from top universities and backing serial entrepreneurs with their own IP assets.
As well as capital, Zinc provides a high-level of hands-on, value-add support to founders across the first two years of the new companies they are building. This support includes technical development, building the company, hiring, securing funding, IP protection and regulation, and go-to-market.
Reason for commitment from British Business Bank
The Bank previously made a commitment to Zinc II in 2022. Zinc’s Science-For-Impact Fund builds on Zinc’s position in the UK VC ecosystem, attracting a diverse and technical founder base at the company creation stage and early-stage investment in the UK.
This aligns closely with the Bank’s objective of strengthening the pipeline of new and investable companies and strategy to support the UK’s most promising companies in the Industrial Strategy sectors of Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy and Life Sciences.

Zinc Science-For-Impact Fund has completed full British Business Bank due diligence and received Investment Committee approval.
This is an investment under the Enterprise Capital Funds programme, through which the British Business Bank takes a reduced profit share. Once original commitments have been repaid, the British Business Bank does not take its pro rata share of profits, with additional returns flowing to private investors.
The level of public leverage and profit share is set through a competitive process to ensure the British Business Bank receives a commercially viable return while providing sufficient incentive for private investors to commit capital to venture funds.
