Who we are

Our mission is to drive economic growth by helping smaller businesses get the finance they need to start, scale and stay in the UK.

From delivering the Coronavirus support schemes during the pandemic, to supporting over 100,000 entrepreneurs via our Start Up Loans, we use our expertise to inspire, inform, and enable businesses at every step of their journey.

In 2025 we brought our subsidiaries, British Business Investments and British Patient Capital, under the British Business Bank umbrella. This has made the bank the UK’s largest domestic investor in venture and venture growth opportunities whilst helping us focus on making the finance available to smaller businesses more diverse, more plentiful, and easier to access.

Today we provide better access to finance, supplying useful information and tools, and developing strong regional networks, we help shape the future for many smaller businesses across the UK, driving prosperity for all.
