Longwall Ventures is an established UK early-stage venture capital firm dedicated to deeptech companies. With over 18-years’ experience of commercialising scientific research and turning breakthrough technologies into global businesses, Longwall has invested in more than 50 companies ranging from medical devices to defence and aerospace applications.
Longwall invests in IP-rich businesses and is often one of the first investors following spinout of technology from UK universities, research labs or corporate R&D departments. Based on the Harwell Campus, Longwall backs businesses from across the UK.
Reason for commitment from British Business Bank
The Bank has previously made commitments to Longwall, backing its Oxford Technology ECF LP (2008), Longwall Ventures ECF LP (2012) and Longwall Ventures 3 ECF LP (2017) funds. This latest commitment to Longwall Ventures Fund 4 represents the fourth Longwall fund the Bank has backed. It aligns with the Bank’s strategy to support the UK’s most promising companies in the Industrial Strategy sectors of Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy, Defence and Life Sciences.

Longwall Ventures Fund 4 has completed full British Business Bank due diligence, and received Investment Committee approval.
This is an investment under the Enterprise Capital Funds programme, through which the British Business Bank takes a reduced profit share. Once original commitments have been repaid, the British Business Bank does not take its pro-rata share of profits, with additional returns flowing to private investors. The level of public leverage and profit share is set through a competitive process to ensure the British Business Bank receives a commercially viable return while providing sufficient incentive for private investors to commit capital to venture funds.
