Mary Whenman Managing Director, Communications and Marketing

Mary was appointed Managing Director, Communications and Marketing in September 2025. Mary joined the British Business Bank in 2018 as Director, Communications and took on the role of Senior Director, Group Communications in 2024.

She leads a multi-award-winning team and in 2021 Mary was awarded Outstanding Contribution to the industry and her team won In-house team of the Year at the Public Relations and Communications Association City & Financial Awards for leading the British Business Bank’s communications response to support smaller businesses through the Covid-19 pandemic. Before moving in-house, Mary had a 25-year global agency career specialising in corporate communications and reputation management.

Mary is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, is a Chartered PR Practitioner, has featured in the UK’s PR Week Power Book since 2015, was President of UK Women in PR 2015-2018, and is a Freeman of the City of London and The Worshipful Company of Communicators.
